Iron Rangers and North Stars win Saturday
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A pair of Superior International Junior Hockey League contest saw the Minnesota Iron Rangers and Thunder Bay North Stars win by identical 4-1 scores over the Dryden Ice Dogs and English River Miners respectively.
MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 4 DRYDEN ICE DOGS 1 – Matt O’Dea had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Iron Rangers defeated the Ice Dogs at Hoyt Lakes Arena.
After a scoreless first period Minnesota took the lead with the only goal of the second stanza as Austin Frank connected at 13:26.
O’Dea made it 2-0 early in the final frame as he scored a second after a penalty to his team had expired.
The Iron Rangers used the power play to go up three as Trevor Hoth found the mark at 4:40.
After O’Dea made it 4-0, Chris Varrin broke Alex Reichle shutout bid with a minute and a half remaining to round out the scoring.
The home side held the edge in shots on goal as well by a 38-30 margin with Reichle picking up the win and Shayne Dietl the loss.
THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 4 ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 1 – Daniel Delpaggio had a goal and an assist as Thunder Bay toppled English River at the Fort William Gardens.
A tightly-contested first period saw neither side manage to score a goal.
The North Stars opened the scoring near the six-minute mark of the second thanks to Brett Wolframe to put the Stars in front after 40 minutes.
Cary Brown made it 2-0 Thunder Bay early in the third only to see Ben Smaha get the Miners on the board at 4:43.
Delpaggio used the power play to increase the lead for the Stars as he buried his 16th goal of the season midway through the session to extend a point streak to seven straight games.
He then set-up Kenny Turner for an insurance marker in the late going to round out the scoring.
Eric Mann picked up the win in net while P.D. Melgoza suffered the loss in a contest that saw the North Stars out shoot the Miners 40-25.
