Ice Dogs blast Miners

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs had seven skaters with multiple-point nights as they blasted the English River Miners 7-1 Thursday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ear Falls Arena.

The Ice Dogs charged out to a quick start in this this one, grabbing a 2-0 lead before the contest was five minutes old.

Zachery Kercz, in his first game back with Dryden, made his presence felt by scoring just 72 seconds after the opening face-off.

Jonathon Philley then notched his 10th of the season at 4:54 to put the Ice Dogs up a pair.

English River got themselves on the board just over two minutes later as Taylor Bargar beat Dryden starter Josh Martin for his second of the campaign to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes.

Ex-Miners’ forward Eric Masters came back to haunt his former side by adding to the Ice Dogs lead just 44 seconds into the middle stanza spelling an early end to English River’s Greg Harney’s night as he was replaced by P.D. Melgoza.

Moments later Kercz greeted Melgoza by burying his second of the evening at 1:19.

Dryden continued to pour it on as Troy Williams redirected a point shot from the left side to extend their lead to 5-1 while Chris Sitko added another for the GM Ice Dogs as he connected at 8:14 to put the visitors up by five through two periods.

Another early tally to begin a session saw Dryden add to their offensive outburst as Cole Golka notched his league-leading 15th of the campaign 61 seconds into the third to go along with four earlier assists for a five-point night.

Josh Martin made 23 saves to record the win for the Ice Dogs.

Harney suffered the loss as he and Melgoza combined to face 29 attempts in defeat.

SIJHL play resumes Friday as Dryden returns home to host the Minnesota Ice Dogs in an 8 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
