Fort Frances takes SIJHL Bill Salonen Cup opener vs. Dryden

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers used a well-balanced attack getting goals from six different skaters to defeat the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 6-2 in Game 1 of the Bill Salonen Cup Superior International Junior Hockey League championship series Thursday evening at Ice for Kids Arena.

Game 2 goes Friday back in Fort Frances starting at 6:30 p.m. Central at Ice for Kids.

The defending SIJHL champion Lakers got of to a good start opening the scoring three minutes into the contest as Colton Spicer notched his third of the playoffs.

Dryden drew level midway through the frame as Jonathon Philley beat Fort Frances starter Nathan Park.

Two tallies in the latter stages of the session allowed the home side to go up a pair as Miles Nolan and Matt Vela struck in quick order to make it 3-1 Lakers after one.

SIJHL most valuable player Cole Golka pulled the GM Ice Dogs to within one 4:55 into the middle stanza as he connected for the sixth time in the postseason.

Fort Frances restored their two-goal cushion late in the second as Mason Meyer snapped one past Dryden netminder Tate Sproxton at 18:12 to make it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes.

Special teams allowed the Lakers to add some insurance in the third as Bryson Jasper finished off a crisp passing play during a man advantage at 12:12.

Marco Romano then wrapped things up offensively in the Game 1 win for Fort Frances in late going with his second playoff marker.

Shots on goal favoured the Lakers 39-25 with Park picking up the victory and Sproxton the loss.
