Fort Frances lights up English River

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Lucas DeBenedet tallied twice and set-up three others to help the Fort Frances Lakers dump the English River Miners 10-4 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ear Falls Arena.

Fort Frances got going early in this one taking a 2-0 lead before the two-minute mark on efforts by Dylan Robertson and Marco Romano.

Miners rookie forward Alex Maticic put the home side on the board with his current team-leading 14th of the season at 17:19 of the first.

The Lakers came right back however and tacked on two more in the final minute of the frame from Bryson Jasper and Sam Schultz.

Aaron Beauchamp brought English River closer 3:02 into the second only to see the visitors Matt Vela add one while his side was shorthanded at 7:34.

The Miners got that back 37 seconds later on a Jarrett Day power play marker.

Again Fort Frances countered getting goals from Jasper and Schultz to go up 7-3 after two periods of play.

Richard Dartnall picked one up for the Miners early in the third, but the Lakers put the game away notching the final three tallies of the evening off the sticks of Romano, DeBenedet and Wyatt Cota to round out the scoring.

English River did hold the edge in shots 42-40 with Pierce Dushenko making 38 saves to pick up the win.

P.D. Melgoza started for the Miners and allowed four against in one period of work with Greg Harney suffering the loss in relief in facing 29 pucks fired his way.

Fort Frances returns to game action Saturday as the visit Memorial Arena in Dryden to take on the GM Ice Dogs in an 8 p.m. start.
