Dryden takes Game 3 in OT

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Derek McPhail goal near the midway point of the first overtime propelled the Dryden GM Ice Dogs to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Tuesday evening in Game 3 of the Bill Salonen Cup Superior International Junior Hockey League championship series at Memorial Arena.

With the win the GM Ice Dogs now lead this best-of-seven set 2-1 heading into Game 4 Wednesday back in Dryden at 7:30 p.m.

Fort Frances got on the board first in this one as Bowen Alcock was the trailer on a Lakers rush and fired home his fourth of the playoffs at 4:18.

Dryden pulled level with eight and a half minutes to go in the frame as Troy Williams’ point shot found its way through a crowd to knot the proceedings at 1-1.

It stayed that way through a scoreless second period and into the third where the Lakers used special teams to retake the lead as Wyatt Cota capped off a crisp passing play on a give and go with Bryson Jasper as the Fort Frances forwards combined to connect on the power play at 5:30.

The GM Ice Dogs tied it once again a couple shifts later as hometown product Drew Walske shovelled in his first postseason marker by Fort Frances netminder Nathan Park.

That set the stage for OT where McPhail wired an attempt off a face-off win by Blake Berg past Park at 8:39 for the game-winner as Dryden took their first lead of the series.

Both goaltenders were solid in the contest with Tate Sproxton making 28 saves to record the win while Park made 37 stops in defeat for the Lakers.
