Dryden dumps Minnesota to re-take series lead

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs got a pair of goals and an assist from Cole Golka to help them defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 6-1 Monday evening in Game 3 of their Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal series at Memorial Arena.

With the victory, the Ice Dogs now lead the best-of-seven affair 2-1 heading in Game 4 Tuesday back in Dryden at 7:30 p.m.

The home side got off to a great start in this one grabbing a 3-0 lead after one period of play.

SIJHL MVP Golka got the Ice Dogs on the board at 6:11 while Matt Houston added another just 20 seconds later.

Special teams allowed Dryden to increase their cushion as defencemen Troy Williams fired one past Iron Rangers starter Devin Tappenden at 13:16 of the frame.

They then chased the Minnesota netminder in the middle session as Golka struck shorthanded and Blake Peavey had one at even strength a minute and a half later to end Tappenden’s night in favour of Kyle Carignan.

Minnesota got on the board during a man advantage opportunity of their own as Alex Arnold beat Tate Sproxton at 13:40 to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes.

The Ice Dogs then capped off their night with the lone tally of the final frame as Zachery Kercz was sent  in alone on a breakaway in the latter stages of the contest and made no mistake as he wired a backhander into the top left hand corner eluding Carignan.

Jonathon Philley and Blake Berg each chipped in with two assists for the winning side.

Shots on goal favoured Dryden 38-23 with Sproxton picking up the decision and Tappenden the loss.
