Dryden doubles up Fort Frances 6-3

DRYDEN, Ont. – Dylan Cusmano notched a natural hat trick while Cole Golka’s game-winner matched a franchise record for goals in a season as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs doubled up the first place Fort Frances Lakers 6-3 Wednesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Memorial Arena.

Cusmano got the GM Ice Dogs going by scoring twice in the opening period on markers two and a half minutes apart.

The Dryden forward then completed his three-tally night 12:33 into the middle stanza as he extended the home side’s lead via the power play.

Fort Frances got on the board at 15:12 of the second as A.J. Kapcheck secured one during a man advantage for the Lakers.

Just over a minute later Golka buried the eventual game-winner to make it 4-1 Dryden with his effort being the 42nd time he has scored this season.

That effort matches a team record for tallies in a single campaign as he equalled the 42 Jordan Chong supplied for the club back during the 2005-06 season.

The Lakers moved closer 56 seconds later as Mason Meyer tallied for the 25th time in 2014-15 while Dylan Kooner made it a 4-3 game at 18:56 of the session.

Dryden countered that with a key marker with just four seconds left in the period as Derek McPhail struck on the power play to give the GM Ice Dogs a little cushion.

Jonathon Philley finished things off offensively with the final goal of the evening, coming midway through the third to complete the win for Dryden.

Eric Masters assisted on all three of Cusmano’s tallies for a three-point night of his own.

Shots on goal were 33-26 in the Ice Dogs favour with Tate Sproxton picking up his SIJHL-leading 19th victory of the season.

Nathan Park (11-2) was saddled with just his second loss in 14 games since he joined the Lakers back in mid-December.

League play resumes Thursday as Fort Frances hosts the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7:15 p.m. start at Ice for Kids Arena.
