Bonthron leads Fort Frances past Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, Ont. –  Fort Frances Lakers’ rookie defenceman Robbie Bonthron scored his first two Superior International Junior Hockey League goals Wednesday evening to help lead his side to a 4-1 victory over the Thunder Bay North Stars at the Fort William Gardens.

Thunder Bay got on the board first as former Lakers’ defenceman Aaron Wesley-Chisel floater from the right point off a face-off win by Brandon Wolframe found its way into the back of the net at 10:32 of the opening period.

Fort Frances used the power play to draw level before the session was complete as Dylan Robertson beat North Stars’ starter Eric Mann three minutes later.

The Lakers went in front midway through the contest as Nolan Ross notched the eventual game-winner for the visitors.

Bonthron then struck twice in just over a four-minute span to supply his initial two tallies in the SIJHL.

Dylan Kooner and and Miles Nolan drew assists on both of Bonthron’s blasts.

Nathan Park picked up the win for Fort Frances as the league leaders improved to 32-8-0-1 on the season.

Mann suffered the loss for second place Thunder Bay as they dropped to 23-17-0-4 overall.
