3 points apiece for Sitco, Varrin as Ice Dogs outlast Wilderness

DRYDEN, Ont. – Chris Sitco and Chris Varrin each accumulated a game-high three points to help the Dryden Ice Dogs outlast the Wisconsin Wilderness 7-5 Wednesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena.

Both sides scored once in the opening period with Sitco connecting for Dryden at 17:51 and Billy Foy countering for Wisconsin 33 seconds later.

The Ice Dogs then jumped out to a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes in a high-scoring second stanza.

Tanner Vinson gave the visitors the lead at 2:21 only to see the home side answer back with efforts from Chris Belhumeur, on the power play and Kercz shorthanded to put Dryden back on top.

After Nick Eytcheson levelled the proceedings again at 10:32 the Ice Dogs stormed back with three goals in a four-minute span from Tim Kavanaugh, Derek McPhail and Mack Boyce to take control.

Kercz’s second of the night early in the third extended the cushion before Vinson and Alex Rezansoff added later markers for Wisconsin to round out the scoring.

With his three-point night, Varrin extended a career-best point streak to seven games in which he has recorded 13 points.

Shots on goal favoured Dryden 35-24 with Shayne Dietl picking up the win and Griffin Strain the loss.

SIJHL action resumes Thursday as the Wilderness travel to Ear Falls to take on the English River Miners at 7 p.m.
