North Stars blank Miners

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Riley Corbin turned aside all 29 shots he faced while Nicholas Nigro tallied twice, including the game-winner, as the Thunder Bay North Stars blanked the English River Miners 3-0 Sunday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Fort William Gardens.

Following a scoreless opening 20 minutes in which the Miners outshot the North Stars 11-8, Thunder Bay got the only marker they would need 88 seconds into the second period as Nigro notched the eventual difference maker with an unassisted effort.

Special teams allowed Thunder Bay to extend their lead late in the stanza as Kenny Turner connected on the power play.

Nigro then iced it late in the contest as he picked up his second of the day and 14th of the season with 2:12 to go to round out the scoring.

Defenceman Joe Newhouse had an assist for the North Stars in the win to extend a consecutive game point streak to nine, which is a current SIJHL high.

The shutout by Corbin was his third of the campaign.

Korlan Vader faced 27 shots in defeat for English River.

The same two teams will meet again Monday evening back at the Gardens in a 7:30 p.m. start.
