Wednesday sees Iron Rangers and Lakers pick up wins

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A pair of games on the Superior International Junior Hockey League docket Wednesday night saw the Minnesota Iron Rangers edged the Wisconsin Wilderness 4-3 while the Fort Frances Lakers stopped the Dryden Ice Dogs 6-2.

MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 4 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 3 – At Hoyt Lakes Arena a Tom Fazio goal in the third period proved to be the difference as the Iron Rangers slipped past the rival Wilderness in a close contest.

Each side found the back of the net in the opening frame with Trevor Hoth connecting for Minnesota and Sawyer Jacobson countering for Wisconsin.

The home side jumped out to a 3-1 cushion after 40 minutes with Cody Shively and Jonathon Losurdo notching the markers for the Iron Rangers.

Darrick Howard brought the Wilderness back to level as he notched a pair of efforts four minutes apart to tie things up at 3-3.

It would not last however as Fazio buried the winner to give Minnesota their 28th victory of the season.

Erick Majerle made 20 stops to record the win while Griffin Strain saw 38 pucks fired his way in a losing cause for the Wilderness.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 6 DRYDEN ICE DOGS 2 – The Fort Frances trio of Lucas Debenedet, Mason Meyer and Lyndon Lipinski combined for 10 points to help lead them over the Ice Dogs at Dryden Memorial Arena.

Fort Frances took a 1-0 lead after one period of play on Meyer’s 33rd goal of the season.

The Lakers made it 3-1 after 40 minutes sandwiching markers by Lipinski and Hunter Leishman around one by Dryden’s Synee Coonishish.

They extended their cushion early in the final frame thanks to a Cameron Jackson power play blast at 1:31.

Nolan Kinney answered back for the Ice Dogs just over a minute later, but the visitors put the game away on tallies by Debenedet and Bryce Lipinski to seal the victory.

Shots on goal favoured the Lakers 40-29 with Devin Tappenden picking up the win and Joakim Jutras suffering the loss.

Next up on the SIJHL schedule has the English River Miners heading to Thunder Bay to take on the North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
