Trio of SIJHLers named to Lakehead Thunderwolves roster

THUNDER BAY – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced that a trio of its alumni from the 2012-13 season have been named to the 2013-14 roster of the OUA’s Lakehead University Thunderwolves

Dryden Ice Dogs forward Paul Thompson, who earlier committed to attend L.U., joins former Thunder Bay North Stars Matt Kaarela and Adam Restoule, as three of eight first-year skaters that were named to the Thunderwolves line-up Monday.

Thompson, a 21-year-old forward who hails from Woodstock, Ont., was a solid contributor on both ends of the ice for the Ice Dogs picking up 35 points in in 46 regular season contests, including 17 goals.

In the postseason he was a point-per-game man for Dryden leading the Ice Dogs in playoff tallies with four while also sharing the club’s overall point lead with seven in as many outings.

As for Kaarela, the Thunder Bay product stays in his hometown to play coming off a 2012-13 campaign where he led the North Stars and was second overall in SIJHL goals scored with 35 while finishing eighth in total points in the league with 56 in just 36 games.

Restoule meanwhile is another Thunder Bay native that will continue to play in front of the Fort William Gardens faithful this year.

He picked up 15 points in 16 games for the North Stars last season and also had three points in nine contests with the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights.

The trio join a number of other SIJHL alumni at Lakehead joining the likes of former two-time league most valuable player Trevor Gamache as well as Ryan Magill, Brennen Menard, Kelin Ainsworth and Carson Dubchak.

Game action for the Lakehead Thunderwolves begins Oct. 4 as they host the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers at the Gardens.

As for the SIJHL, its 13th season begins Friday as Thunder Bay visits Fort Frances and Dryden hosts English River.
