Stars’ Brattengeier blanks Iron Rangers in SIJHL playoff opener

THUNDER BAY, Ont.  – Jayme Brattengeier stopped all 34 shots he faced to backstop the Thunder Bay North Stars to a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in game 1 of the Superior International Junior Hockey League playoffs Saturday at the Fort William Gardens.

The only goal of the contest came midway through the opening session as Mathias Gardiman beat Iron Rangers’ netminder Chase Hollander.

Both goaltenders shut the door the rest of the way with Hollander finishing up with 21 saves overall in the tight-checking, low-scoring affair in Thunder Bay.

With the win the North Stars now lead the best-of-three first round series 1-0 heading into game 2 Monday evening at Hoyt Lakes Arena. The opening face-off there is set for 7 p.m.

The winner will meet the No. 1 seed Minnesota Wilderness in one SIJHL semifinal.

No. 2 Fort Frances takes on No. 3 Dryden in the other league semifinal.
