Spicer strikes late as Lakers edge Iron Rangers

FORT FRANCES, Ont.  – A Colton Spicer power play goal with 1:08 remaining was the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers edged the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-3 Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

After Tyler Broderson opened the scoring early in the contest to give Fort Frances the early lead, Minnesota responded with a pair of tallies from Trevor Hoth to put the visitors on top after one period of play.

The Lakers leveled the proceedings after 40 minutes courtesy of Brendan Cawston’s fifth goal of the season, which came at the 17:09 mark.

Jordan Christianson made it 3-2 Fort Frances four minutes into the final frame only to see Tyler Tuneberg tie it at 8:26.

That set the stage for Spicer’s game-winner in the late going with just seven seconds left in a man advantage opportunity.

Talor Joseph made 24 stops to earn the victory in net for Fort Frances winning his fourth consecutive game since joining the club last month.

Chase Hollander faced 31 shots in a losing cause for the Iron Rangers.

SIJHL action resumes Thursday as the Iron Rangers return home to host the league-leading Minnesota Wilderness at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Game time is 7 p.m.
