North Stars rally to edge Lakers in OT

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Mathias Gardiman’s power play goal 1:41 into overtime lifted the Thunder Bay North Stars to a come from behind 5-4 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at the Fort William Gardens.

Kevin Kurm opened the scoring for the Lakers striking 53 seconds into the contest beating Thunder Bay starter Jayme Brattengeier for the only goal of the opening period.

The Lakers extended their lead to 3-0 by the six minute mark of the middle frame with Jacob Nolan and Merritt Rysavy both denting the twine in the north end of the Gardens ice.

Dylan Mascarin cut the deficit in half before the midway portion of the contest while Mason Prout scored on the power play to level the proceedings at 2-2.

Rysavy’s second of the stanza then put Fort Frances on top to give the Lakers the lead after 40 minutes.

Wade Garbett started the North Stars comeback striking early in the third period while Mitchell Fox forced OT with 3:41 remaining in regulation.

With Fort Frances down a man heading in overtime, Gardiman completed the comeback for Thunder Bay, slamming home the winner past Lakers’ netminder Eric Messer.

The North Stars, who were outshot 42-34 on the night, improved to 5-1 on the year while the Lakers remain winless at 0-3-1.
