North Stars edge Miners in OT

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Taylor Santorelli’s second goal of the game, which came with 59 seconds remaining in overtime, lifted the Thunder Bay North Stars to a 5-4 come from behind victory over the English River Miners Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ear Falls Arena.

English River jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on tallies by John Morales and Brendan Wilde.

After Morales connected again 4:50 into the middle session, Santorelli started the North Stars comeback at 7:48 of the second.

Thunder Bay pulled to within one before the stanza was complete thanks to a Tim Cavar power play point blast.

The visitors then notched the equalizer with 2:06 remaining courtesy of Brandon Wolframe.

Kris Kellaway then put the Stars up one at 19:01 only to see the Miners score with six seconds left in regulation and force OT on Paul Lamoureux’s tying tally.

Santorelli won it late in extra time however to give Thunder Bay the win and the extra point in the standings.

Zach Grezlewski picked up a pair of assists, including one on the game-winner as did Vincent Currao for the Miners.

Daniel Del Paggio also added a helper for Thunder Bay to extend a consecutive game point streak to 26 straight outings.

Shots on goal favoured the North Stars 49-40 with Nathanial Dupuis picking up the win and Greg Harney suffering the OT setback.

SIJHL play resumes Wednesday on two fronts as the Minnesota Iron Rangers host the Wisconsin Wilderness at 7 p.m. at Hoyt Lakes Arena while the Dryden Ice Dogs entertain the Fort Frances Lakers in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
