Lakers open semifinal series with win over Ice Dogs

FORT FRANCES, Ont.  – A four-goal second period helped propel the Fort Frances Lakers to a 6-1 victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs Thursday night in game 1 of their Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal playoff series at Ice for Kids Arena.

The home side opened the scoring midway through the opening stanza as Tyler Broderson beat Dryden starter Eric Szymczyk for the only goal of the session.

Answering back early in the middle frame for the Ice Dogs was Paul Thompson, who connected at 2:42 to tie it at 1-1.

Special teams allowed the Lakers to retake the lead at 10:45 of the second as Jacob Nolan scored on the power play.

Then just 33 seconds after Nolan’s effort Fort Frances struck again with Simon Desrosiers doing the damage to make it a 3-1 game.

The Lakers continued to roll getting tallies from Brendan Cawston and Kevin Kurm to go up 5-1, which spelled the end of the night for Szymczyk, who gave way to Robert Kopytek the rest of the way.

Fort Frances completed the triumph with a late effort from Alex Bruess to round out the night’s scoring.

Talor Joseph turned aside 21 of 22 attempts to pick up the victory while Szymczyk faced 24 shots while allowing five goals in a losing cause for Dryden.

Kopytek stopped six of seven in just over 23 minutes of relief for the Ice Dogs.

Game 2 goes Friday back in Fort Frances at 7:30 p.m.
