Jacobsen nets 3 as Iron Rangers pull out late victory over Ice Dogs

DRYDEN, Ont.  – A Trevor Hoth goal with 1:28 remaining was the difference as the Minnesota Iron Rangers edged the Dryden Ice Dogs 4-3 Thursday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

After a scoreless opening period Cole Sonstebo put Dryden on top 5:20 into the middle frame as he struck shorthanded.

Minnesota answered right back two minutes later as Sawyer Jacobsen notched his first of the night to level the proceedings.

Once again the Ice Dogs went back on top thanks to an Evan Capobianco power play effort midway through the stanza.

The Iron Rangers again replied quickly with Jacobsen scoring 41 seconds after that to knot the score at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

A man advantage effort allowed Jacobsen to complete a hat-trick 7:21 into the third only to see Dryden’s Tyson Holder tie the contest with 8:15 to go.

That set the stage for Hoth’s winner in the late going helping his club pull out the road victory.

Joey Rebedew made 29 saves in picking up the win in net for the Rangers who improved to 25-22-0-2 on the year.

Eric Szymczyk faced 34 shots in a losing cause for the Ice Dogs who fell to 26-20-0-1 overall.

The same two sides meet again Friday and Saturday evening back in Dryden at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s other SIJHL contest sees the Thunder Bay North Stars hosting the league-leading Minnesota Wilderness in a match-up that will be staged at Port Arthur Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The other two games in that weekend set will be played back at the Fort William Gardens Saturday and Sunday.
