Wilderness sink Lakers 5-2

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Jeremy Johnson had a goal and two assists to help lead the Minnesota Wilderness to a 5-2 triumph over the Fort Frances Lakers Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Following a scoreless opening period the visitors jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes in the rematch of last season’s Bill Salonen Cup league championship series.

Johnson and Jake Larson, skating in his first SIJHL game, made it 2-0 visitors before the five-minute mark of the middle frame.

Colton Spicer’s man advantage effort pulled the Lakers to within one midway through the session only to see Joseph Drapluk and Michael MacKinnon strike a minute and 36 seconds apart to extend the Wilderness lead.

Hunter Leishman brought Fort Frances to within a pair with 5:23 to go, but Jordan Shockley added some late insurance to round out the scoring.

Gordy Defiel made 19 saves to pick up the win while Tanner Hamilton faced 33 shots in a losing cause.
