Wilderness, SIJHL mourn loss of former player

SPOONER, Wis. – The Wisconsin Wilderness and Superior International Junior Hockey League are mourning the loss of a former player in Donnie Roberts Jr. who was one of two people tragically killed in a single motor vehicle accident Sunday in Stone Lake, Wis.

Two others were also seriously injured in the crash according to a Washburn County Sherriff’s Office release.

Roberts was a member of the 2010-11 Wilderness squad that captured the Bill Salonen Cup SIJHL championship and also competed at the 2011 Dudley-Hewitt Cup in Huntsville, Ont.

He also saw action with the Wisconsin Mustangs in 2009-10 who played a partial schedule in league before going on to win the title in their first full-year in the league.

Roberts’ father, Donnie Sr., has also spent time in the league over the years with various clubs from the area in Wisconsin as both a coach and manager.

“The entire SIJHL sends their deepest condolences to the Roberts family on their tragic loss,” said league President/Commissioner Ron Whitehead. “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
