Wilderness hold on to defeat North Stars

CLOQUET, Minn.  – The Minnesota Wilderness built up a 4-0 first period lead then held on to defeat the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars 5-3 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.

Already having clinched their third straight SIJHL regular season crown, the Wilderness saw Jake Larson, Nick Szopinski, Peter Barral and Conrad Sampair all find the back of the net in an opening stanza that saw Thunder Bay starter Mitchell Knight chased in favour of Jayme Brattengeier.

It was all North Stars in the middle stanza however as they tallied three times on markers by Bryce Martin, Cary Brown and Trevor Hynnes, which caused the Wilderness to send in JoJo Jeanetta in place of starter Gordy Defiel after that third Thunder Bay effort.

Minnesota would prevail however getting some third period insurance from Jordan Shockley to round out the night’s scoring.

Shots on goal were 40-22 with the home side holding the advantage.

SIJHL action resumes Sunday in an all-Minnesota match-up with the Wilderness paying a visit to Hoyt Lakes to take on the Iron Rangers at 5 p.m.
