Wilderness edge North Stars 4-3

CLOQUET, Minn.  – A Michael MacKinnon goal 3:04 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Minnesota Wilderness edged the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-3 Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

The lone tally of the opening period came in it late as Troy Olson beat Thunder Bay starter Jayme Brattengeier, on the power play, with 54 seconds remaining in the session.

Adam Restoule struck twice in the middle frame for Thunder Bay while Jake Larson countered for the Wilderness to make it a 2-2 game after 40 minutes.

Minnesota replied quickly in the final period with Nick Sova putting them back on top at the 40-second mark scoring on Mitchell Knight who came in to replace Brattengeier midway through the contest.

MacKinnon then added his effort just over two minutes later to put the Wilderness up a pair.

Matt Kaarela pulled the Stars to within one with 12:11 remaining, but that’s as close as they would get.

Shots on goal favoured the Wilderness 43-31 with JoJo Jeanetta picking up the win and Knight the setback in relief as he stopped 16 of 18 attempts in relief.
