Evan Mayer scored three as the Dryden Ice Dogs surged into first place with a convincing 8-0 win over visiting Kenora. Mayer struck for the last two goals in a five-goal first, was denied by James Sinclair off a spectacular save half way through the second, but scored on a one-timer at 5:48 of the third to complete the hatty.
The 19-year-old Duncan, BC native raised his season total to four goals and seven points on the season.
Kellan Mooney recorded a 14-save shutout picking up his fourth win and first clean sheet of the season. Mooney leads all SIJHL netminders with a 1.80 GAA and .939 save percentage--and he tied Ashton Sadauskas of Kam River in the win category.
Carson Devine scored on his own rebound, Kelby Diehl deked to his way to his first SIJHL marker and Eli Antoine bumped the lead to 3-0 before the ten-minute mark. Mayer scored unassisted at 11:57 and got his second on the same shift 19 seconds later to put the game away.
Kenora was outshot 21-6 in the frame.
Emmanuel Nkombou and Max Roby upped the ante to 7-0 in the second.
Mayer recorded the lone goal of the third. Devine added an assist, and Elias Eisenbarth and Payton Hu had two assists each for Dryden.
Sinclair faced 55 shots for Kenora.
Kenora was 0-2 with the man advantage while Dryden was 0-3. The two most heavily penalized teams in the league took a combined eight minor penalties.

A crowd of 1,938 fans jammed the Fort William Gardens and saw the North Stars grind out their first home win with a 4-2 decision over cross-town rival Kam River. The victory was Thunder Bay's seventh in a row.
Tag Bryson notched his first of the season on a screen shot from the point on a Stars' powerplay at 7:51 of the initial frame. Easton Glousher doubled the lead at 17:37 on a goal mouth feed from Cohen Tangedal.
In the second, Jett Mintenko scored on a breakaway to shave the lead to one. Alex Remenda snapped home his seventh to regain a two-goal advantage for the Stars.
Nicholas Fagnilli went high blocker on Keenan Marks for his seventh to reduce the lead to 3-2 with 1:05 left in the game.
Tyler Jordan's eighth of the year into an empty Kam River net with 21 seconds remaining provided the necessary insurance.
Marks made 25 saves for his fourth win. Travis VanderZwaag allowed three goals on 37 shots.
Jordan added an assist while Tangedal had three helpers for Thunder Bay.
The Stars were 1-3 with the man advantage while shutting down three Kam River powerplays. Both teams drew three minor penalties. |

Tyler Jordan scored two goals, becoming the first SIJHL player to hit double digits, and Ben Laurette made 27 saves as Thunder Bay completed a weekend sweep over Kam River with a 4-0 win at Norwest Arena.
Thunder Bay is two points behind Dryden and has a five point lead over Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances.
Rookie Evan Simeoni scored his sixth goal of the year, batting in a loose puck, for the lone goal of the first period.
Jordan got his goals 16 seconds apart in the second. Chance Loke weaved through the Walleye defence and fed Jordan for his first of the game at 9:16. Jordan connected on a rebound for his 10th of the year moments later.
Easton Glousher continued his renaissance season with his sixth at 7:12 of the third. Glousher is a point away from equaling the 12 points he registered in 30 regular season games last year.
Ashton Sadauskas stopped 30 of 34 in the Walleye net in the loss.
The teams split 55 minutes in penalties. Both penalty killing units were at the top of their game. Thunder Bay was 0-7 while Kam River was 0-5 on their respective powerplays.

Kelby Diehl scored two and Braxton Castagno stopped 27 of 29 as the first place Dryden Ice Dogs defeated Fort Frances 5-2.
Special teams figured in the first period scoring. Landon Lowes' shorthanded wrist shot beat Castagno for 1-0 Lakers' lead at 14:17 of the first. Just 36 seconds later, Dryden's Diehl replied on same Dryden powerplay, sniping from a tough angle to knot the score at one-all.
Gavin Simon's powerplay one-timer at 25 seconds of the second period put the Lakers up 2-1. It was all Dryden after that. Diehl got his second of the game at 6:18 on a rebound. Max Roby gave the home team a 3-2 edge heading the third, going five-hole on a breakaway backhander--his seventh of the year.
Griffin McGraw got his first of the year on a rebound, and Tegan Kerr added an insurance marker at 13:25 to put the game to bed.
Nolan Koethler stopped 37 of 42 for Fort Frances.
Major penalties erupted at 17:40 of the first period with fighting majors and game misconducts handed out to both squads. Forty-eight PIMs were deal out in total, with the teams splitting 48 minutes. The Lakers were 1-4 while Dryden was 1-5 on their respective powerplays.

Dryden ran its winning streak to seven, maintaining a two-point lead atop the SIJHL standings, with a 5-1 win over Fort Frances before 424 fans at Ice For Kids Arena.
Kellan Mooney made 36 saves for the Ice Dogs securing his league-leading fifth win between the pipes. Mooney leads all goaltenders in save percentage and goals against average through week five.
Riley Balicki capitalized on a Lakers' turnover for an early 1-0 Dryden lead. Carter Deschamps vaporized the deficit 20 seconds later, smoking a one-timer past Mooney. Mooney was money after that however, as the 'Dogs scored the next four over the course of the game.
Brandon Gustafson got his first of the year at 15:23 of the second on a Fort Frances turnover to put Dryden ahead to stay. McLaren Paulsen's wrap around backhander at 18:32 made it 3-1.
A powerplay marker by Max Roby, his eighth, and an empty net goal by Hunter Dingman, his first, iced the contest.
Nolan Koethler stopped 43 of 47 in the Lakers' defeat.
Dryden was 1-1 on the powerplay while the Lakers struck out in four attempts. Dryden took six of the 10 minor penalties.
Dingman and Paulsen added assists and Emmanuel Nkombou had two helpers for Dryden.
Dryden's Devine, Payton Hu, Paulsen, Nkombou and Roby are first and third through six in point production in the league. |

Ironwood's 5-5 powerplay propelled the Lumberjacks to an impressive 9-4 win over Kenora. Nolan Fowler had a hat trick and a pair of assists, and Marshall Thomas had two goals and three assists to power the visitors to their first win of the year.
Kole Kronstedt, the SIJHL's iron man in net with 459 minutes between the pipes, made 39 saves for his first win. Ben Cailo had 48 stops for Kenora.
Ironwood's Brayden Loney scored the only goal of the first period, notching his first of the campaign with 13 seconds left in the period.
Fowler's second of the year at 8:37 on an Ironwood powerplay launched a five-goal second period. Keestin Danielson and Josh Boyko tied the game at 2-2, before Thomas and Chase Krtanjek helped Ironwood to a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The Lumberjacks scored four on the powerplay and Jack Carruthers added an even strength goal to put the game away in the third. Fowler had goals 21 seconds apart to lead the way. Marshall Braunscheidel added a solo tally, with Thomas' fifth of the year at 12:22 adding to the onslaught. Tallen Caron and Gursimar Mann had solo markers for the Islanders. Both Caron and Mann recorded their first goals of the year.
The Islanders took 57 penalty minutes to Ironwood's four minor penalties.
Braunscheidel added an assist and Collin Baker and Josh Gulden had three assists each for the 'Jacks.
The Islanders drew 146 fans. |

Ironwood won their second straight, defeating Kenora 4-1 to pass them in the standings. Jack Croghan scored two shorthanded goals and Kole Kronstedt won his second of the year, shunting aside 26 of 27.
Gursimar Mann opened the scoring for Kenora at the six minute mark of the evenly played first period, accepting a pass from Hunter McLean and firing one past Kronstedt. Ironwood scored twice in the second to erase Kenora's lead.
Islanders starter James Sinclair stoned Ironwood's Andrew Mercer penalty shot attempt with a blocker save at 8:14 of the second. Croghan scored unassisted at 12:21 on a breakaway from his own blue-line in. Nolan Fowler got his fifth at 14:24 on a two-on-one with Collin Baker to put the 'Jacks ahead 2-1 through two periods.
The Lumberjacks padded their lead with two more in the third. Josh Gulden assisted on Croghan's second shorty at 7:59. Croghan sniped top shelf for his third of the year.
Kenora took a late penalty but still had time to pull Sinclair for an extra attacker at the expiration of it. Marshall Thomas foiled that strategy with his sixth of the year with 12 seconds left into the vacated cage.
Ironwood outshot Kenora 45-27 overall, including a 24-shot barrage in the second frame. Neither team scored on their powerplay chances. Ironwood was 0-2, Kenora 0-4. Kenora took 16 of the 29 penalty minutes. |

Bryson Carlyle's two goals and Nathan Dann's three points helped the Red Lake Miners to a 4-1 win over Sioux Lookout. Trent Boryszczuk evened his record to 2-2-0 in the win.
Red Lake climbed to .500 with the road 'W' while the Bombers fell to .500 with the loss.
Dann scored from the slot at 4:05 of the first to draw first blood against his old team. Landon van Engelen got Red Lake's second tally, tucking one under the bar at 13:51, to put the Miners up by two.
The teams exchanged second period goals. Carlyle struck at 2:03 from the high slot for a 3-0 Miners' lead. Owen Riffel finally recorded his first of the season on a rebound at 15:23 on a Bombers' powerplay to get the home town boys on the board.
Carlyle's fourth of the year on a Miners' powerplay provided an insurance tally with 2:41 left in the third.
Mathew Spencer-Dahl saw his record drop to 2-3-0 on the season. Shots were incomplete at press time.
Red Lake took 41 of 62 penalty minutes assessed. The Miners were 1-3 with the man advantage. The Bombers were 1-10 while up a man. |

Sioux Lookout evened the weekend series with a 2-1 series win on Saturday.
Alex Lucas scored his sixth in the first period, converting Beau Bannerman's point shot rebound at 7:14 for the Bombers opening salvo.
After a scoreless second Kaden Veller cashed in Owen Cotter's cross-ice feed at 3:23 of the third for a 2-0 lead. Quinn Szpak broke Matthew Ofukany's shut-out bid with 51 seconds to go, putting one over his pads from close in. Boryszczuk was pulled for an extra attacker at the time. The Miners fell short in completing the comeback.
Ofukany stopped 20 of 21 for the win. Boryszczuk saved 37 of 39.
Both teams were scoreless on five powerplay attempts. The Bombers took 14 of 24 penalty minutes.
