FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Dougie Newhouse handled all 24 shots he faced to record his fifth shutout of the season as the Thunder Bay North Stars blanked the Fort Frances Lakers 2-0 in a low-scoring Superior International Junior Hockey League goaltenders duel Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.
Fort Frances netminder Jacob Gnizziejko turned in a stellar performance for the Lakers finishing with 50 saves in the narrow defeat while only allowing one puck to get past him on the night.
After a scoreless first frame, Thunder Bay finally connected late in the second stanza as Jacob Brown scored on his club’s 37 shot of the contest.
It stayed 1-0 until the final moments of regulation when Michael Stubbs put one into an empty net at 19:49 to help seal the road decision.
The victory was the 12th in a row for Newhouse as he improved to 18-1-1 in his past 20 appearances for the league-leading North Stars.
