Strong 3rd sends Norskies past Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thief River Norskies broke open a one-goal game by scoring four times in the third period to help them best the Minnesota Iron Rangers 6-2 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota did get on the board first in this one as Matt Turnbull notched the lone marker of the opening 20 minutes.

Thief River Falls came back in the middle stanza however with a pair of tallies supplied by Nick Harder and Tate Steffan to take a 2-1 lead after two periods.

A couple of quick efforts, just over a minute apart, from Blake Nelson and Connor Bowey extended the visitors cushion in the first half of the third.

Kip Knutson’s first SIJHL goal midway through the final frame brought the Iron Rangers closer, but Alec Daman’s ninth and Jacob Schuldt’s initial league marker put the game away for Thief River Falls in the late going.

Bowey, Mason McIntosh and Brett Piper had two assists apiece in the triumph for the Norskies.

Picking up the win in net for the guests was Bailey Schmitz while Nick Corneliusen and Synjen Amende both saw time in goal in defeat for Minnesota.
