Saturday sees Minnesota, English River and Fort Frances all win

THUNDER BAY – Three Superior International Junior Hockey League games Saturday saw the Minnesota Iron Rangers, English River Miners and the Fort Frances Lakers all come away victorious.

MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 2 THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 1 – In another close contest the visiting Iron Rangers got a pair of goals from Jason Reynolds to edge the North Stars at Fort William Gardens.

Reynolds had a first period power play marker followed by an even strength effort in the second, which turned out to be the game-winner.

Zach Grzelewski had the long Thunder Bay tally coming late in the middle stanza.

Alex Reichle made 36 saves in a winning cause for Minnesota who fired 54 shots on Nathanial Dupuis in the North Stars net as he was solid despite the defeat.

ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 6 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 4 – English River completed the two-game weekend sweep of the Wilderness as they defeated Wisconsin for a second straight time at the Spooner Ice House.

Ryker Moreau had a big night for the Miners as he scored twice and dished out a pair of assists.

Brendan Wilde also tallied twice in the victory while Dominic Blouin and Taylor Bargar supplied singles.

Sawyer Jacobson and Alex Rezansoff both found the back of the net twice for the Wilderness in a losing cause.

Shots on goal favoured Wisconsin 36-35 with P.D. Melgoza registering the win and Luke Thompson the loss.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 5 DRYDEN ICE DOGS 2 – The Lakers skated to their 15th straight victory as they picked up the road win at Dryden’s Memorial Arena on Military Appreciation Night.

Miles Nolan and Mason Meyer put the Lakers up two early before Chris Sitco got Dryden on the board before the opening frame was out.

After Brent Aiken made it 3-1 Fort Frances in the second, the Ice Dogs’ Tim Kavanaugh connected on the power play midway through the session to make it a 3-2 game.

The Lakers’ Billy Grillo however put the visitors back up a pair before the stanza was complete.

Hunter Leishman then rounded out the scoring in the third at the 12:40 mark.

Jordan Carrney stopped 23 of the 25 attempts he faced to register the win while Robert Kopytek-MacKenzie faced 41 shots in defeat for Dryden.
