Red Lake earns weekend split in Thief River Falls

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – Spencer Milne scored three times and added an assist to aid in a 6-4 victory by the Red Laker Miners over the Thief River Falls Norskies, despite a penalty-filled third period, in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Milne got the Miners going by notching the night’s first two tallies a couple minutes apart in the opening frame.

After Isaac Brown put Thief River Falls on the board early in the middle session, Red Lake answered almost immediately on a Ryan Howe effort.

Milne then finished off his hat trick at 7:49 while converting on a man advantage opportunity to make it 4-1 for the guests.

However, the home side countered by picking up a trio of tallies before the period was complete to knot the score as Mason McIntosh, Baron and Jonah Henderson all found the back of the net, that included the final two coming on the power play.

In the third though, Ryan Patterson picked up the eventual game-winner at 3:41 before a Howe insurance marker at 14:06 helped secure the road decision for Red Lake.

The Norskies did hold the edge in shots, by a 38-26 margin, with Willms picking up the victory.

Caleb Sauer started for Thief River Falls and allowed four goals against while Seth Purcilly gave up the final two and suffered the loss in relief.
