Pair of Miners’ alumnus commit to Canadian universities

RED LAKE, Ont. – The English River Miners of the Superior International Junior Hockey League has announced that a pair of team alumni has committed to attend university in British Columbia and play hockey for their respective schools.

Ryker Moreau is off Simon Fraser University and skate for the Clansmen while Landen Matechuk will attend the University of Victoria and play for the Vikings men’s program.

Both SFU and UVic are members of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.

A three-year veteran of the English River organization, the 20-year-old Moreau skated in 158 career SIJHL games scoring 37 times and helping set-up 56 more for 93 points.

That includes personal single-season highs in goals, assists and points in 2015-16 with 16, 30 and 46 respectively for the St. Albert, Alta., product.

As for Matechuk, the 21-year-old forward from Fort Langley, B.C., saw action in 51 leagues games and supplied 20 tallies and 27 helpers for 47 points.

Last season also saw him register 22 points in 15 outings for the Timmins Rock of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League on, including seven markers.

English River opens their fourth season in the SIJHL Friday, Sept. 23 on the road vs. the Dryden GM Ice Dogs.

The Miners home opener is slated for Saturday, Oct. 8 against the Thunder Bay North Stars at Cochenour Arena.
