Noseworthy OT hero as GM Ice Dogs storm back vs. Miners to win 5th straight

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Nic Noseworthy marker 2:27 into overtime finished an impressive comeback as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs rallied from a three-goal third period deficit to upend the English River Miners 5-4 in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Wednesday evening at Memorial Arena.

Dryden opened the scoring eight and a half minutes into the contest on a Matt Houston power play goal.

The Miners got a fortunate bounce to knot the affair 5:19 into the second as Daniel Szpakowski banked one in from a sharp angle for his eighth of the season.

English River added another 62 seconds later on a Hank Bouchard effort.

The visitors added to their cushion midway through the stanza via a Brandon Schaber man advantage tally to make it 3-1.

Alex Maticic extended the Miners lead in the first minute of the third as he notched his 18th of the campaign.

Kyle Pouncy started Dryden’s comeback just as a Miners penalty had expired to make it a 4-2 game with 13:13 to go.

A long range blast by Blake Berg from just inside his side of the centre-ice red line somehow found its way past English River goaltender Korlan Vader at 13:31 to make it a one-goal game.

Berg then forced OT by notching the equalizer with 1:49 in regulation.

In the extra session, Noseworthy completed the GM Ice Dogs comeback as he snapped the game-winner high right side from the left face-off circle to give Dryden their fifth win in a row.

Troy Pierce made 25 saves to pick-up the win while Vader faced 42 shots in the OT defeat.
