Thunder Bay, ON – The Thunder Bay North Stars went supernova, defeating the Fort Frances Lakers 9-2 at Fort William Gardens. Nikolas Campbell and Jamie Fuchs each exploded with hat tricks. Brendan Stroble faced 63 shots in the loss and only his fine goaltending kept it from double digits.
Fuchs scored at 14 seconds of the first and Campbell doubled the lead 3:19 later.
Campbell scored next on a Stars powerplay. Brady Krentz’ 11th on a Fort Frances powerplay at 15:51 got the Lakers on the board, but Fuchs and Colby Feist scored 13 seconds apart to give the Stars a 5-1 lead after 20.
Mason Wesley’s first goal of the season was a beauty, as he dangled his way to the crease area and fired it past Stroble for a 6-1 lead. RJ Dickie added his 9th late in the period for a 7-1 margin.
Clark Scaddan scored unassisted for Fort early in the third. Campbell got his hat trick marker at 7:37 and Feist got his third at 13:46.
Keenan Marks rebounded from Saturday to post his 13th win while making 30 saves.
Colby Feist had three assists in addition to his goal. Sam Skillestad had three assists for Thunder Bay and Dimitri Trahiotis and Edison Weeks had two helpers each.
Thunder Bay was 2-5 with the man advantage. Fort Frances was 1-5. Attendance was 242.
The Stars are three points behind Sioux Lookout for third place. Both squads have five games left.
