North Stars knock off Miners

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A three-goal first period outburst sent the Thunder Bay North Stars on their way to an eventual 5-1 victory over the English River Miners Saturday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter at the Fort William Gardens.

Avery Siau staked Thunder Bay to the lead just past the seven-minute mark of the contest before teammate Jake Behse notched his first as a member of the North Stars wiring one high past English River starter Westin Cardwell from the right side.

Rookie forward Keighan Gerrie did the work for the home side’s third tally of the frame that resulted in a tap in for Alex Maticic from close range at 13:53.

The Miners picked up the lone marker of the middle frame right off a face-off that saw Jacob Siebenga to spin and fire one past Thunder Bay netminder Dougie Newhouse.

Ryan Mignault got that back for the North Stars 68 seconds into the third before Bradley Thrower’s power play effort later in the session wrapped up the scoring with his team-leading 21st of the season.

Thunder Bay outshot English River 38-29 on the night with Newhouse picking up the win while Cardwell suffered the loss.
