North Stars knock off Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Brad Arabia tallied twice to help the Thunder Bay North Stars defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-3 Saturday in the Superior International Junior Hockey League-opening game of the season for each club at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Both teams tested each other out in a scoreless opening 20 minutes in which Thunder Bay fired 18 shots on Minnesota starter Jonathan Chinn while Nathaniel Dupuis was tested nine times.

Jackson Heacock’s first SIJHL goal put the Iron Rangers on the board 5:40 into the middle stanza only to see the North Stars come right back with the equalizer 31 seconds later on Arabia’s first of the night.

Tallies a minute and a half apart then put the visitors up 3-1 thanks to efforts from Nicholas Nigro and Jesse Talakoski.

Minnesota used the power play to pull within one before the second was complete when Eric Pristyazhnyuk collected his first league marker at 16:53.

Up a man, the home side tied it early in the third when Logan Froberg beat Dupuis at 2:40.

The back and forth affair returned to Thunder Bay’s favour at 8:01 as Zack Glowatch notched the eventual game-winner.

Arabia then added some insurance four minutes later to round out the scoring.

Charlie Corness dished out two assists to aid the winner’s offensive cause.

The North Stars outshot the Iron Rangers 40-37 on the night with Dupuis picking up the victory and Chinn the loss.
