North Stars’ Joe Newhouse named 2017-18 SIJHL RBC Scholastic Player of the Year

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that Thunder Bay North Stars captain Joe Newhouse has been named the SIJHL’s RBC Scholastic Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

With the honour the 20-year-old Thunder Bay product earns a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of RBC to help defer costs of his post-secondary education.

Newhouse also becomes the SIJHL’s nominee for the Hockey Canada/Canadian Junior Hockey League RBC Scholastic Player of the Year Award, which will be announced May 18 at the RBC Cup Awards Banquet in Chilliwack, B.C.

That recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship courtesy of RBC.

A former Honour Roll student at Hammarskjold High School in Thunder Bay, Newhouse is currently in his second year in the Kinesiology Program at Lakehead University.

A veteran of 213 SIJHL games, the defenceman has now completed his Jr. A career.

In all, the blueliner amassed 154 points on 30 goals and 124 assists.

He also contributed another 20 points in 33 playoff and postseason contests, including the recently completed Dudley-Hewitt Cup.
