North Stars humble Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars picked up points from 16 different skaters Saturday as they went on to humble the Minnesota Iron Rangers 14-2 in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay applied heavy pressure in the first period firing a 27-shot barrage on Minnesota starter Nick Corneliusen and were rewarded with goals provided by Keighan Gerrie, Brendan Gillis, Michael Vecchio, Joel Willan and Kyle Auger.

The onslaught continued in the middle session as they outscored the Iron Rangers 5-1 in the session on a pair of markers courtesy of Ben Erwin and singles from Ryan Mignault as well as Evan Nicholas and Johathan Kilby with the latter two picking up their first SIJHL tallies.

Erik Engdahl notched his initial league goal for Minnesota during a man advantage opportunity in the stanza.

After Lukas Lundgren put in his team-leading sixth for the home side early in the third, the North Stars finished off the romp as Vecchio added another, Erwin completed a hat trick on a penalty shot, while Alex Erwin and Willan, via the power play, rounded things out.

Dougie Newhouse faced 18 shots in the Thunder Bay net and picked up the win.

Corneliusen suffered the loss for Minnesota in one period of work while Kolton Kringstad played the final two frames as the Iron Rangers’ duo faced a total of 60 attempts on net.
