North Stars and Lakers earn Tuesday triumphs

THUNDER BAY – Two games on the Superior International Junior Hockey League slate Tuesday saw the Thunder Bay North Stars defeat the Dryden Ice Dogs 5-3 while the Fort Frances Lakers stormed back from a three-goal deficit to upend the Wisconsin Wilderness 7-4.

THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 5 DRYDEN ICE DOGS 3 – Daniel Delpaggio tallied twice to help pace the North Stars past the Ice Dogs at Fort William Gardens.

Delpaggio, who earlier in the day was named to represent the SIJHL at this weekend’s Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Prospects games in Nova Scotia, opened the scoring for the home side with a power play marker at 16:32.

After Matthias Gardiman made it 2-0 Thunder Bay early in the second, Dryden’s Dane Feeny put his side on the board at 6:48.

Answering right back for the North Stars was Cary Brown with Delpaggio increasing the cushion to 4-1 five minutes later.

The Ice Dogs then added another later in the session thanks to a Tyson Holder man advantage effort.

The score stayed 4-2 until the late going when Brandon Wolframe and Feeney exchanged power play tallies in the final minutes to round out the scoring.

Nathanial Dupuis finished up making 24 saves to record the win for the Stars who improved to 10-1-1-1 overall.

Shayne Dietl saw 41 shots fired his way in the loss for Dryden who dropped to 9-10 on the season.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 7 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 4 – Colton Spicer and Lucas Debenedet had two goals apiece to help Fort Frances rally their 13th consecutive victory in a come from behind triumph over Wisconsin at the Spooner Ice House.

The Wilderness grabbed a 2-1 lead after one period of play getting markers from Darrick Howard and and Tanner Vinson before Spicer pulled the Lakers to within one with a goal at 18:38.

Wisconsin then extended their cushion to 4-1 by the midway point of the second stanza thanks to Danny Toycen and Alex Rezansoff.

Fort Frances began their comeback at 10:41 of the middle frame when Brandon Sinclair connected on the power play.

Debenedet, the SIJHL’s leading point producer added to his totals, netting a pair of markers 35 seconds apart to level the proceedings after 40 minutes.

The Lakers then put the game away in the third getting the game-winner from Brent Aiken at 2:13, Spicer’s second of the night two minutes later and Kevin Kurm icing it in the final minute as he scored on the power play, into an empty net.

Shots on goal favoured Fort Frances by a 54-46 margin with Jordan Cartney in relief of Ryan Ferguson picking up the win in net and Luke Thompson the loss.
