Norskies upended by MJHL’s Flyers

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – The Winkler Flyers (MJHL) jumped out to a two-goal first period lead and never trailed as they went on to defeat the Thief River Falls Norskies 5-1 Friday in a Canadian Junior Hockey League exhibition contest at Huck Olson Arena in front of over 1,000 fans that were in attendance.

Braden Billaney and Nolan McGuire staked the Manitoba Junior Hockey League side to the early lead with late markers in the opening frame.

Special teams allowed Thief River Falls to get back in it 2:28 into the middle stanza as Blair Lindholm buried a Keaton Huot feed while on the power play at 2:28 for the Superior International Junior Hockey League club.

Winkler countered with a man advantage effort of their own from Tyler Jubenville, just over three minutes later.

The Flyers added another at even strength from Lawson McDonald at 14:35 to give the visitors a 4-1 cushion through two periods of play.

Gino Lucia then rounded out the scoring with the lone tally of the final frame.

The same two teams will finish off their home-and-home Saturday evening in Winkler at 7:30 p.m.
