THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Red Lake Miners goaltender Zach Willms has been named its Play It Again Sports Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 10.
In three straight appearances over the weekend, Willms came away with the victory in each of them backstopping Red Lake to a trio of road wins with a pair of decisions over the Thief River Falls Norskies and one vs. the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
The efforts of the 19-year-old netminder from Camrose, Alta., saw him register a .935 save percentage during the time frame along with the three triumphs.
Willms, who has won each of his past seven starts, currently leads all SIJHL goaltenders in wins with 20.
Meanwhile, he sits third in goals-against average at 2.63 and his .923 overall save mark also ranks him third-best in the league. He is also knotted for second in shutouts with two.
Also earning consideration for player of the week honours was Ethan Knutsen, (F) Fort Frances Lakers; Curtis Magas, (F) Dryden GM Ice Dogs; Keighan Gerrie, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Blake Nelson, (F) Thief River Falls Norskies and Matt Turnbull, (F) Minnesota Iron Rangers.
