Miners’ Sommerfeld named SIJHL Play It Again Sports Player of the Week

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Red Lake Miners captain Shaye Sommerfeld has been selected its Play It Again Sports Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 29.

In a pair of outings during the time frame, the 20-year-old from Drayton Valley, Alta., registered five points in a pair of home ice triumphs for the Miners over the Wisconsin Lumberjacks.

Friday night he notched the game-winning goal and added an assist then followed that up Saturday with two more tallies, including another difference maker, and a helper as Red Lake topped Wisconsin once again.

Of note, Sommerfeld has supplied the game-winning goal in each of the Miners three victories early in the SIJHL season.

He’ll enter play this week leading the league in offensive production with seven points, including four markers.

Also earning consideration for player of the week honours were Justin Pitari, (F) Dryden GM Ice Dogs; Seth Purcilly, (G) Thief River Falls Norskies; Jacob Brown, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Nick Swain, (F) Fort Frances Lakers and Jack Jones, (D) Wisconsin Lumberjacks.
