Miners rally to stun Iron Rangers with buzzer beater

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The English River Miners stormed back from a 5-2 third period deficit with four unanswered goals, including the game-winner from behind the net just as time was about to expire, to propel them to a stunning 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Sunday afternoon in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ear Falls Arena.

Minnesota jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on markers from Tom Fazio and Austin Frank before Paul Lamoureaux pulled the Miners to within one late in the opening stanza.

The Iron Rangers then extended their cushion to 5-2 after 40 minutes getting tallies from Tyler Tuneberg, Matt Audet and Fazio once again while Royce King countered for English River.

English River then made it 5-4 with 7:44 to go thanks to John Morales and would notch the equalizer courtesy of Vincent Currao at the 15:08 mark.

The Miners then capped their incredible comeback just as regulation time was set to expire as Morales shovelled the puck from behind the net off the skate of Minnesota netminder Alex Reichle and in to cap off an amazing comeback.

Greg Harney, who entered the game to begin the third in favour of starter P.D. Melgoza, made 15 saves in relief and was credited with the victory. Melgoza stopped 20 of 25 in two periods of work.

Reichle faced 25 shots in the hard-luck setback for the Iron Rangers.
