Miners double trouble for the Bombers

By James Brohm

Sioux Lookout, ON – The Sioux Lookout Bombers kicked off a full week of hockey games. The Miners’ short bench didn’t stop them from outworking the home team for a full 60 minutes.

The Miners didn’t waste any time getting on the board. Just one minute and 22 seconds into the first frame, Gabe Tanton popped in a goal on a 2 on 0 generated by a Bombers pinch at the Miners line. Nearing the end of the first period, the Miners were able to convert on the power play with a point shot by Dayvan Bull tipped in front by Kyle Schechtel. The Miners took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Miners capitalize on a defensive zone breakdown by the bombers just after the expiration of a bombers penalty at the 3:29 mark of the second. Ty Woodard drifted a shot on net from the left point that fooled Bombers’ netminder Ethan Penner. Dobie Unrau added the the Miners lead at 5:36. The Bombers would finally get on the board with about three minutes left in the second. Mitchell Daines squeaked a puck past Miners’ goalie Trent Boryszczuk. The teams retired to their respective dressing rooms with the Miners up 4-1.

Just 15 seconds into the third, Luke Decorby jumped on a fumbled puck in the slot in front of the Bombers net and a quick shot stunned Penner.  Nathan Dann notched his 12 of the season at 4:15 to bring the Bombers back within three. Dobie Unrau snuck down off the point and past his check for the perfect back door play on a feed by Gabe Tanton, restoring the Miners’ four-goal lead. Conner Burke, who had helpers on the first two Bombers goals got one of his own at 12:24 but it was too little, too late. The Miners skated away with a 6-3 win.

Ethan Penner had a rough outing for the Bombers 6 goals against on 32 shots. At the other end of the ice, Trent Boryszczuk was solid earning the win turning away 42 of 45 pucks.

The Miners are idle for the rest of the week with their next game at home against the Fighting Walleye. The Bombers host the Lumberjacks Thursday, and a weekend series against the Fighting Walleye.
