Miners blast Iron Rangers for 2nd straight night

RED LAKE, Ont. – Led by a hat trick and two assists from Bryce Young the Red Lake Miners thumped the Minnesota Iron Rangers 9-1 in Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Cochenour Arena.

Young opened the scoring during a man advantage at 11:39 of the first before Ryan Patterson added one at even strength a couple shifts later to put the home side up by a pair.

Cole Bohnet then tacked on his first SIJHL tally 15 seconds later as the Miners took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Red Lake then blew it open in the second stanza as they struck for five goals to take complete control.

Young with a pair started the barrage before Bailey Hartman, Kyle Uzelman and Jun Yi Zhong supplied singles to cap off the outburst in the frame.

After Kyle Uzelman added to the lead in the third period, Minnesota broke Zach Willms’ shutout bid at with 15:29 remaining when Kip Knutson and Zach Ash combined to set-up Joe Lech for his initial league goal to round out the night’s scoring.

In all, eight different Red Lake skaters produced multi-point games in the romp.

Willms finished with 13 saves to pick up the win while Synjen Amende was peppered with 60 shots against in defeat for the Iron Rangers.
