Matechuk’s big night sends Miners past North Stars

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Landen Matechuk scored four times and assisted on another to help lead the English River Miners to a 6-4 victory over the Thunder Bay North Stars Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

Special teams gave English River the early lead in this one as Trevor Pereverzoff struck shorthanded two minutes into the contest.

Avery Siau levelled the proceedings for Thunder Bay at 6:36 with his seventh goal of the season only to see Matechuk tack on his first two tallies of the night four minutes apart to put the visitors up by a pair.

Aaron Balcombe brought the North Stars closer at 18:38 of the opening frame.

The home side tied it again 13:55 into the middle session on Landon Letwin’s first SIJHL goal.

However the Miners notched a pair of late power play markers before the second was complete as Matechuk and Ryker Moreay scored 49 seconds apart to put the visitors in front for good.

Nicholas Nigro moved the North Stars to within one midway through the third, but Matechuk capped off his big night with an insurance marker into an empty net at 19:16 to secure the English River win.

Brad Arabia had a couple of helpers for the Stars.
