Lucas with 2 as Lakers defeat Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Nick Lucas had a pair of goals while newcomer Owen Lee dished out two assists in his Fort Frances Lakers debut Friday in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota did get off to a good start as Christian Ward collected his third marker at 12:29 of the first period.

Lucas got that back for Fort Frances later in the frame though to tie it at 1-1 after one.

The Lakers then went in front for good 16:50 into the middle stanza as Lucas notched his second of the night and 11th overall before teammate Cole Allan knocked in the eventual game-winner in the final moments of the stanza.

Erik Engdahl brought the Iron Rangers closer early in the third only to see Kirk Coppock’s seventh put the visitors back up by two at 7:17.

Fort Frances then secured the win in the late stages on a Isaac Baron insurance effort to round out the night’s scoring.

Brett Hahkala also had a two-point night for the Lakers with a pair of helpers.

Matt Booth made 19 saves to pick up the win while Nick Corneliusen faced 43 shots in defeat for Minnesota.
