Lakers top GM Ice Dogs

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers got two goals in each of the first two periods and never trailed en route to a 5-2 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs in a penalty-filled Superior International Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

Fort Frances grabbed the early lead in this one on a Cole Tymkin effort 86 seconds after the opening face-off.

Davis Ross made it 2-0 Lakers just past the seven-minute mark of the frame as he converted during a man advantage opportunity.

Ross added to the Fort Frances lead with another power play tally, which came in the first minute of the second stanza.

Nolan Ross picked up his first midway through the session as the home side went up by four through 40 minutes.

Brandon Zajicek extended the Fort Frances cushion early in the third, which saw Dryden replace starter Troy Pierce in favour of Taylor Unruh the rest of the way.

The GM Ice Dogs dashed Lakers’ netminder Pierce Dushenko’s shutout bid with 4:53 to go as Joe Carney collected his first SIJHL goal. Via the man advantage.

Matt Houston then rounded out the scoring with 29 seconds left while his side was up a man.

Dylan Robertson and Nick Minerva had two assists apiece for Fort Frances.

Dushenko finished with 37 saves to post the victory for Fort Frances.

Pierce suffered the loss allowing five against on 25 shots while Unruh handled all four attempts he saw in relief.
