Lakers rally to edge Ice Dogs and move in 2nd place

FORT FRANCES, Ont.  – A Patrick Sofer goal with 4:59 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Fort Frances Lakers rallied for a 5-4 come from behind victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs Tuesday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

The win allowed the Lakers to move into sole possession of second place in the SIJHL standings, two points ahead of the Ice Dogs, while also still holding two games in hand.

Dryden notched the lone goal of the opening stanza as Len Pelletier scored on the power play 5:43 into the contest.

Each side tallied twice in the middle frame with Tyson Holder and Mike Butler striking for the Ice Dogs with Jordan Christianson and Tyler Broderson countering for Fort Frances.

After Alex Bruess tied things up 3:48 into the third, Holder’s second of the night put the visitors back on top five minutes later.

Joel Bogacki then leveled the proceedings midway through the final stanza setting the stage for Sofer’s game-winner.

Reigning Pizza Hut player of the week Talor Joseph made 30 stops improving to 3-0 since joining the club and helping the Lakers improve to 26-15-1-2 overall.

Eric Szymczyk faced 37 shots in a losing cause for Dryden who dipped to 26-19-0-1 on the campaign.

SIJHL action resumes Thursday as the Ice Dogs host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. start at Dryden’s Memorial Arena.
