Lakers double up Ice Dogs 4-2

DRYDEN, Ont.  – Merritt Rysavy tallied twice and added an assist to help lead the visiting Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-2 triumph over the Dryden Ice Dogs Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Fort Frances got on the board 3:28 into the middle session as Kevin Kurm notched his 15th goal of the season beating Dryden starter Eric Szymczyk.

After Tyson Holder leveled the proceedings a minute and a half later, Rysavy put his squad back on top at 14:24.

Midway through the final frame Simon Desrosiers increased the Lakers’ cushion to 3-1 only to see the Ice Dogs’ Jesse Linner strike back just seven seconds later.

The score stayed that way until Fort Frances captain Rysavy iced it with an empty-net effort in the last minute.

Talor Joseph booted out 32 shots to pick up his sixth straight win since joining the Lakers last month.

Szymczyk was peppered with 50 shots in a losing cause for Dryden.

With the victory Fort Frances moves six points clear of Dryden in the race for second place in the SIJHL standings.

The same two teams meet again Friday, but with Ice for Kids Arena in the Fort serving as the venue.

The league’s other match-up that night sees the front-running Minnesota Wilderness hosting the Thunder Bay North Stars at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.

Both contests get underway at 7:30 p.m.
