Lakers cruise to 11th straight victory

DRYDEN – Make it 11 wins in succession for the Fort Frances Lakers.

Currently ranked fifth overall in the 128-team Canadian Junior Hockey League, the red-hot Lakers added their latest triumph as they rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena.

It was a tightly contested opening stanza with Fort Frances taking a one goal lead after 20 minutes thanks to a Kevin Kurm effort at 14:06.

The score stayed way until the midway point of the middle stanza when the Lakers erupted for five tallies in a span just over nine minutes to take full control.

Five different skaters notched those markers for Fort Frances as Mason Meyer, Bryce Lipinski, Patrick Sofer, Colton Spicer and Torrin Grange all found the mark.

Miles Nolan also chipped in with a pair of assists for the Lakers

Jordan Cartney turned aside all 31 shots he faced to register his first SIJHL shutout as well as the initial one in the league this season.

Dryden starter Shayne Dietl allowed four goals on 25 shots and suffered the loss with Robert Kopytek-MacKenzie stopping 10 of 12 he faced in 24 minutes of relief.

With the victory the SIJHL-leading Lakers improved to 12-1-0-1 while the Ice Dogs fell to 8-9.
