Iron Rangers spoil North Stars home opener

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Eric Madison first goal of the game, 1:24 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Minnesota Iron Rangers defeated the Thunder Bay North Stars 3-2 Sunday in the Superior International Junior Hockey League home opener for the North Stars Sunday evening at the Fort William Gardens.

Gus Karkinen staked the visitors to the lead midway through the opening period only to see Thunder Bay respond with the equalizer off the stick of Avery Siau at 16:48.

Special teams saw the Stars go in front 2-1 three and a half minutes into the middle session on a Kenny Turner power play marker.

Minnesota drew even late in the frame as Madison scored with five seconds left in the period.

Madison then potted the difference maker in the third to round out the night’s scoring.

The Iron Rangers outshot the North Stars 36-35 with Bryce Kamenick picking up the win and Riley Corbin the loss.

Game action in the SIJHL resumes Wednesday as Thunder Bay welcomes the two-time defending Bill Salonen Cup champion Fort Frances Lakers to the Gardens in a 7:30 p.m. start.
