Iron Rangers’ Pupplo named Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions player of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Minnesota Iron Rangers goaltender Anthony Pupplo has been named the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions Corp. player of the week for the period ending Jan. 24.
In three starts last week the 20-year-old Shirley, N.Y., product helped the Iron Rangers collect five of a possible six points in the SIJHL standings.
Pupplo began by making 17 stops in a narrow 3-2 triumph over visiting English River on Wednesday as he picked up his first league victory.
One night later the Minnesota netminder turned aside all 32 shots fired his way to record his initial SIJHL shutout in a 5-0 decision over the Miners.
Pupplo then finished off his week by saving 40 attempts in regulation and the five-minute overtime along with two of three in the shootout aiding the Iron Rangers efforts in earning a point during a 3-2 road setback at league-leading Fort Frances Saturday.
Also earning consideration for Amyotte’s player of the week honours was Brandon Bodnar, (G) Fort Frances Lakers; Troy Pierce, (G) Dryden GM Ice Dogs; Nicholas Nigro, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars and, Trevor Pereverzoff (D) English River Miners.
Pupplo and the rest of the Minnesota Iron Rangers are getting set to host the annual SIJHL Showcase Tuesday through Thursday in Hoyt Lakes and Virginia, Minn., with all five league member clubs, along with the Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, taking part.
