Iron Rangers humble North Stars
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers started off with three goals in a 50-second span as part of an eight-tally first period as they went on to roll over the Thunder Bay North Stars by a 10-1 count Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at the Fort William Gardens.
Tristan Knott started the offensive barrage for Minnesota 5:50 into the opening period.
The Iron Rangers came back with another 44 seconds later as Dalton Johnson’s one-handed deflection eluded Thunder Bay netminder Riley Corbin.
Right on the face-off the visitors added another with Nolan Magsamen going high from long range to make it 3-0.
Special teams allowed Minnesota to tack on three more and they collected consecutive power play markers from Tyler Lindstrom, which was sandwiched around a man advantage effort with Logan Froberg’s first SIJHL goal.
The Iron Rangers put an end to Corbin’s night at 17:42 with Austin Ramirez picking up his seventh of the season.
Minnesota then capped off their outburst with three seconds left in the stanza as Dan Sarnecki greeted new Thunder Bay goalkeeper Tyler Lesschaeve by converting on a breakway.
Things tightened up in the middle session with the North Stars notching the lone tally on Troy Sherman’s initial league goal at 10:53.
Lindstrom’s third of the night midway through the third made it 9-1 as he finished off a hat trick.
Alex Mimmack then finished off the rout at 18:48 for the visitors.
Sarnecki finished with three assists for a four-point night while Johnson, Eric Madison, Tristyn Sabina and Keaton Huot dished out two assists each for the Iron Rangers in the romp.
Despite the score, Anthony Pupplo was busy in net making 37 saves along the way to record the win for Minnesota.
Corbin suffered the loss while Lesschaeve stopped 37 of 40 in relief.
